Bio-electrochemical reactor comprising at least one bio-anode and at least one bio-cathode which are immersed in an electrolyte containing micro-organisms in an anode compartment, referred to as the first compartment, and in a cathode compartment, respectively, the anode and cathode compartments being separated by at least one ion exchange membrane, the first anode compartment comprising a port for introducing organic carbon-containing substrate, a first potential difference being applied, during operation, between the bio-anode and the bio-cathode. The reactor comprises a second anode compartment containing an electrolyte which is devoid of electro-active micro-organisms and in which an abiotic anode is immersed, a second potential difference being able to be applied, during operation, between the abiotic anode and the bio-cathode. Use for microbial electrosynthesis from bio-waste.
